Course programme

Module description

Within all health care environments, practitioners are at the forefront in caring for the dying patient. Practitioners are required to work closely with family members in order to support them through the process of the illness and subsequent bereavement. Managing symptoms, supporting client and carers and utilising one's own and others' expertise to the benefit of the client are all important aspects of the role of the palliative care practitioner.

With the development of National End of Life Care Programme, the need to provide the right level of care at the right time and in the right place has been emphasised as of paramount importance to all concerned, for cancer and non-cancer patients.

In this module you will consolidate your learning, drawing on previous knowledge and skills to develop confidence and competence in management of a patient and their carers at the end of life.

Every minute someone in the UK dies but many of us still do not feel comfortable talking about it. This short video created for the national Dying Matters Awareness Week by members of the Derbyshire Alliance for End of Life Care, shows students, patients, visitors, staff and members of the public who were asked a number of questions about death, dying and bereavement, encouraging them to talk about their thoughts and feelings on the important issues around this.

The Derbyshire Alliance for End of Life Care is a collaborative which is made up of organisations including the University of Derby, Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and NHS Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group.
