Paper colour, weight and texture are important factors in many artists and designers' work. Handmade paper has become a popular medium in current art and design practice because of its tremendous versatility.
This course will introduce you to practical, historical and contemporary aspects of paper making. It will lead to an understanding of the technical and creative possibilities facilitated by making paper from a variety of materials. Experimentation and reflection will be encouraged in order for you to combine paper making techniques with your existing skills and allow for new creative developments.

Course programme
The sessions will consist of practical demonstrations, group participation, individual practice opportunities and one-to-one tuition. Daily group critiques will help to develop ideas and will lead to further experimentation. The course will:
- introduce historical and contemporary paper making
- teach techniques needed to create Japanese and Western styles of paper making using equipment that can easily be obtained
- provide skills that can be used after the class at minimal cost
- show you how to make low relief and simple 3D structures
- enable you to experiment with different plant fibres, recycled papers, pigmentation, inclusion and decorative techniques
