The SVQ course is designed to provide the trainee with the knowledge and practical skills to become a technician and supervisor within the horticulture sector.
This Parks, Gardens and Green Spaces qualification covers a range of subjects, including how to estimate the resources you'll need and programme work effectively, and how to coordinate the planting of crops and plants. You'll learn plants botanical names, and about dealing with pests, diseases and disorders. You'll also gain additional skills to take into any job, like promoting, monitoring and maintaining health, safety and security and managing your own resources. This course is available at Elmwood in East Fife, and Oatridge in West Lothian — each campus offers specific additional units. The course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills you need to become a technician or take on a supervisory role in the horticulture sector.

What Will I Learn

A range of topics will be covered during the course including how to promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security, estimate resource requirements and programme work, manage your own resources, coodinate the planting of crops and plants, identify and name plants using the botanic names and coordinate the control of pests, diseases and disorders. Additional specific units will be on offer at each campus.

How Will I Learn

The SVQ Level 3 Horticulture course is completed while at work evidencing their knowledge and skills to the assessor.

Progression Opportunities

On successful completion of the SVQ Level 3 students may progress to Higher National Certificate Horticulture or the Higher National Certificate Landscape Management. Typical employers include local authorities, private sector landscape enterprises, garden centres and institutional employers, as well as self-employed gardeners.
