For example, through living in Spain or in a Spanish speaking country or through family connections. 16 18 year old students will need a grade B and a reference letter from their school/college in order to study at AS. Those applicants aiming to progress onto A2 level will require a grade D at AS level.
PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
This course is a dynamic and interesting approach to learning Spanish. Students will improve their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in Spanish and will also develop their interest, enjoyment and knowledge of the cultures and societies of Spain and Spanish speaking countries.
The AS level is the first part of the A level award
AS rewards students for their ability to converse in Spanish on a topic area of choice and requires students to understand and convey understanding of recordings and texts in Spanish. Students are also expected to produce an essay to demonstrate continuous writing skills in Spanish
The AS level is the first part of the A level
There are two units;
Unit 1: Spoken Expression and response in Spanish
Unit 2: Understanding and Written response in Spanish
AS rewards students for their ability to converse in Spanish on a topic area of choice (including Youth culture & Concerns and The world around us: travel, tourism, environmental issues and the Spanish speaking world).
A2 is the second part of the A level and is a new syllabus in 2009. It is designed to extend and challenge students' linguistic knowledge and skills.
Unit 3:Understanding and Spoken Response in Spanish
Presenting and taking a clear stance on any issue of choice
Unit 4: Research, Understanding and Written response in Spanish
Examination: 2 hrs thirty minutes
a) Translation
b)Spanish language discursive or creative essay
C) Research based essay in Spanish based on topics studied & the culture and society of a Spanish language country/ countries / culture
Students can study the AS on the 1st year and this will provide them with an AS qualification after which students can progress onto A2 on the second year in order to complete the full A level qualification.

Unit 1: Listening and writing; Unit 2: Reading and writing; and Unit 3: Prepared oral topic.
The A2 is the second part of the A level and comprises the following units:
Unit 4: Oral discussion of issues; Unit 5: Coursework or Topics and texts; and Unit 6: Synoptic (listening, reading and writing).
Students can study the AS on the 1st year and this will provide them with an AS qualification after which students can progress onto A2 on the second year in order to complete the full A level qualification.
Some students may wish to study AS and A2 level in the same year by attending two classes (the AS and the A2 class). These students will be working at a faster pace and they will be expected to have a good command of the language at AS level.
Assessment will be through coursework and examination.
PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
A level qualifications are the traditional route into University; a pass at this level is seen as a good indicator of academic ability. Employers value language skills. A language qualification will improve career prospects.
