About this course

Entry is by interview and your experience, any previous qualifications at any level and your reasons for wanting to take a degree, will all be considered. Some students enter with no qualifications at all. Others have O-levels, CSEs or GCSEs.

Part Time Access to Higher Education

Course Description:
Do you want to study for a degree or other higher education programme? Are you looking for direct entry to a degree or higher education programme? Then the Access to Higher Education Programme may be for you. Access programmes are well established throughout the country as an alternative to A level entry to degree programmes at universities and colleges of higher education. They provide entry to a degree with no previous qualifications. The Access programme is divided into different 'pathways', catering for students with differing career and vocational ambitions. These pathways are as follows-: Access to Nursing and Health Related Studies Nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, health administration Access to Teacher Training Teaching at primary level, and humanities, arts, social science subjects at secondary level. Access to Humanities and Social Sciences Humanities and Social Science degrees and occupations - social work, counselling, English, media, journalism Access to Science Science related degrees and occupations - biology, chemistry, marine biology, forensic science etc. Access to Computing The Core Units: 3 components Study Skills and Personal and Career Development- includes discussion, practice of writing skills, time management and presentation techniques. Information Technology - includes keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets and databases and graphics. The Tutorial - is a support and guidance service. This prepares you for the requirements of degree programmes. The Option Units: select 2 from 6 Biology: (Natural Science): using general biology with the focus on human studies, this programme introduces students to the study of investigative methods. Chemical Science: serves as an introduction to the study of atoms and molecules, energy transfer processes, trends and reactions and scientific investigation. History: the focus is British Political, Social and Economic History 1801 - 1851. Literature: includes study of poetry, the novel and drama, from different historical periods. Psychology: includes study of cognitive, social and developmental psychology. Sociology: includes study of class, gender and ethnic inequalities. Students also analyse sociological approaches to crime and deviance and the media. We give you experience of all the teaching, learning and assessment styles you will find on a degree programme, so that you can be confident in lectures, seminars and discussion groups, as well as in writing essays. We start with what you can do and build up from there.

Assessment and Progression:
Assessment is based on coursework and examinations. To degrees and other higher education programmes e.g. diplomas in nursing, midwifery, social work. The Access programme is certified by the Open College Network, East Midlands Region (OCN EMR) validated by the Higher Education Quality Council. Most universities will expect you to have studied subjects or have experience in the areas for which you apply. N.B. Teacher training requires GCSE or equivalent qualifications in English and Maths. In addition you will need GCSE Science.

Duration:
A one-year programme to prepare you for a degree. Study between 13 and 20 hours depending on your needs and 16 hours if you are in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance. The programme begins in September and applications for degree and diploma programmes are made at various points in the year.
