Course Overview The course is designed primarily to provide a route for continuing professional development for teachers with responsibility for learners with specific learning difficulties in literacy and numeracy acquisition. It is appropriate for teachers working within one phase of education - Primary, Secondary or post 16 and who have responsibility for advising and supporting classroom teachers. Qualification gained: OCR Level 7 Certificate in Assessing and Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties
Course Content: There are 5 units to be completed: Psychometric and educational assessment methods - principles of psychometric and educational testing, awareness of published resources, Diagnostic Assessment of learners - planning assessment sessions, conducting assessment sessions, interpreting test results, Communication and liaison with others - writing professional, valid, accessible diagnostic assessment reports, planning teaching programmes to be delivered by others, communicating effectively in an organisational context, Reporting special educational and assessment needs - relevant regulations and guidance, identifying and selecting materials for screening and assessing the needs of learners, writing and processing reports, Teaching learners with dyslexia and reflective practice - planning lessons and preparing resources, delivering lessons and learning support to individuals and groups, reviewing learners' progress and evaluating the effectiveness of teaching.
Work Experience: Candidates need to be employed by an organisation requiring the diagnostic assessment of learners. They will need to have access to records about learners held by that organisation. They will need to organise their own case study for Units 2 and 3.
Course Assessment: Unit 1 is marked through completion of an assignment set by OCR. Units 2,3,4,and 5 are internally assessed and verified.Unit 2 and 3 are assessed by planning, carrying out and writing up a diagnostic assessment of a learner with SpLD. Unit 4 requires the assessing of two learners for Special arrangements, for external exams and completion of appropriate paperwork. Unit 5 is assessed through completion of two teaching case studies. If candidates have already completed the level 4 certificate, this unit will be accredited as prior learning.
Progression: OCR Diploma in Assessing and Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties - level 7, Master degree in Education.
Homework: Most learners will need to spend between 5 and 10 hours per week practicing using the assessment materials and doing background reading and research.
Course Fees

- Part Time Course Fee Relate to Year 1 course fees only. Two year course fees will have an additional course fee for the second year; these fees are subject to confirmation annually.

Entry Requirement
Candidates need to have responsibility for advising and supporting classroom teachers. They will also have responsibility for screening and assessing learners showing signs of SpLD. Candidates will need to organise the diagnostic assessment of a learner and write the report as a case study to demonstrate their ability to carry out diagnostic assessments. In addition, candidates who have not completed the Level 4 Certificate will need to carry out 2 teaching case studies. Candidates with the OCR 307 certificate will only have to complete one additional case study. Candidates will be expected to have a high level of skill and beworking at or above the equivalent of level 3 in the following key skill areas, Literacy, Numeracy, ICT, working with others, improving own learning and problem solving
