British Sign Language Level 1 Certificate
This course is ideal for those who are beginners with no prior knowledge of sign language, or for those who have completed the Level 1 Certificate in Developing Awareness and Communication with Deaf and Deafblind People. This course will introduce British Sign Language using simple everyday topics useful for simple basic conversations in shops, with friends, in work etc. British Sign Language Level 1 is divided into three units each of which will be assessed during the year.

Course Content:
To achieve the full Level 1 Certificate in BSL, candidates are required to pass all three units:

  • Unit 101 Introduction to BSL
  • . Introductory skills, meeting people etc

  • Unit 102 Conversational BSL
  • Conversational skills, using numbers, describing interests and commenting on the weather.

  • Unit 103 BSL at School, College or Work
  • Getting around, exchanging information, description and activities.

    Entry Requirements:
    There are no formal entry requirements.

    Entry Process:
    There is no interview required.

    Assessment:
    Unit 101: is internally assessed Unit 102/103: are both externally assessed by a CACDP assessor.

    Progression Routes:
    After successful completion of this Level 1 course students may wish to progress onto the CACDP Level 2 BSL course, and also complete the Certificate in Developing Awareness and Communication with Deaf and Deafblind People.

    Career Options:
    This is a worthwhile qualification for those working professionally with deaf people, or who have deaf friends and/or family. It is also a suitable entry point for those seeking to begin a career working with deaf people.
