Is the course for me?
What is the aim of a this course? The aim of this course is to allow those students who have got a HNC, with relevant modules, to come onto a one year course and convert the HNC into a Higher National Diploma in Electrical / Electronic Engineering. The BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) is a specialist vocational programme with a strong work related emphasis. The qualification extends the HNC by a further six modules. This adds depth as well as breadth to the student¡¦s knowledge in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector. It raises their qualification with national recognised qualification that is only surpassed by a degree.

What will I learn?
This is a modular course offered by the Construction & Engineering Skills Centre. The course is normally studied over a 1 year period on a day release basis, taking up just one day from 09:00 untill 19:45. The course is made up of six modules,

What subjects will I study? This will depend upon the existing 10 modules you have from your HNC qualification. There are therefore some choices of modules you will take. The main choices are listed below: 1. Application of Power Electronics (H1) 2. Electronic Computer Aided Design (H1) 3. Combinational and Sequential Logic (H1) 4. Mechatronic Systems Principles (H1) 5. Operational Amplifiers (H1) 6. Further Electrical Principles (H2) 7. Further Electrical Power (H2) 8. Further Analytical Methods (H2) 9. Engineering Mathematics (H2) 10. Engineering Design (Core Must have or do.) (H2)

How will I be assessed?
Each unit is internally assessed and graded by lecturers. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit or Distinction. There is no overall grade awarded for this qualification. There is a mix of continuous assessment, such as assignment work, and formal test papers used to assess progress on this course.

What can I do after the course?
A key progression path for BTEC Higher National Diploma learners is to the second or third year of a degree or honours degree programme, depending on the match of the BTEC Higher National units to the degree programme in question.
