Course Description
The Level 3 BTEC Award is designed to provide:

Opportunities for part-time learners involved in the legal sector to achieve a nationally-recognised Level 3 vocationally-specific qualification.

Opportunities for learners from diverse backgrounds to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life, and to allow them to access employment opportunities in the legal sector.

Course Structure
The Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Award in Law and Legal Work is a 90-hour qualification consisting of three units (1 core unit plus 2 specialist units)

Core units

Unit 1 Understanding the English Legal System

Specialist units

Unit 2 Understanding Aspects of Personal Injury Law and Practice

Unit 3 Understanding the Criminal Justice System

Unit 4 Understanding Aspects of Contract Law and Procedure

Unit 5 Understanding Civil Litigation

Unit 6 Understanding Aspects of Employment Law and Practice

Unit 7 Understanding Aspects of Property Law and Procedure

In the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Award, all units are internally assessed.

The overall grading for the Level 3 BTEC Award is a pass based upon the successful completion of all units. Learners must pass one core unit and two specialist units to achieve the Level 3 BTEC Award.

All learners will need to complete an application and interview prior to enrolling.

For learners who have recently been in education, the profile is likely to include one of the following:
  • An Intermediate GNVQ in Business
  • A BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in Business
  • A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to GCSEs at grade A-C
  • Related work experience
  • Other related Level 2 qualifications.


More mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include experience of paid and/or unpaid employment and membership of the Institute of Paralegals.
