Course Content
NVQs are a system of awards that were introduced for people involved in vocational work. There are a series of NVQs specifically designed for those working within the childcare field.
There are five mandatory units and a choice of four optional units, two from option group 1 and the other two from group 1 or 2. The option units chosen will depend on the setting you are working in.
Method of Assessment
Each qualification is a combination of mandatory and optional units. To achieve an NVQ at Level 3 a candidate must be assessed as competent in all of the mandatory units and a choice of four optional units. The choice of optional units will reflect that candidate's work setting. Assessment takes place in the workplace, meeting national standards.
To study on this course you will need to be actively working with children. An assessor will be allocated unless you have a qualified work-based assessor. You will also gather evidence and this will be put in a portfolio. Evidence is your experiences with children and may include witness testimony, observation and reflection on your own practice.
Progression
The course provides opportunities for progression on to a range of courses, such as:
- Foundation Degree in Children, Families & Community Health
- HNC/D in Early Childhood Studies
- Advanced Diploma in Childcare & Education
- NVQ Level 4 (following two years of experience of working in an early years environment & in a management position).
