Summary:

This is designed for aspiring higher technicians who are already working in the Construction Industry and want to continue studying on a day release programme. The course may also be suitable for those seeking a career in the construction industry.

Course Length:
2 years
Course Schedule:
1 day a week - First year on Monday, second year on a Wednesday.
Entry Requirements:

BTEC National with 120 points minimum, or 1 A Level plus 4 GCSEs (A-C), or Access course with industrial experience, or Advanced GNVQ/Vocational A Level in Construction/Advanced Diploma in CBE.

Mature students with a relevant industrial background may also be considered subject to interview.

Assessment:
A mix of in-course assigments and project work.

Academic Progression:
HND in Construction or a degree course, plus opportunity to progress to membership of professional bodies. The UEA, in partnership with the College, has developed a bridging programme and a BA (Hons) Professional Studies progression route for holders of the BTEC HND.

Career Progression:
The course will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed for a variety of interesting and rewarding careers in construction.

Core Units Studied:

Science and Materials
This unit provides the student with an introduction to the scientific principles and a basic knowledge of the properties of materials needed to successfully complete the other core and specialist units.

Analytical Methods
This unit provides the student with the fundamental mathematical knowledge and analytical techniques needed to successfully complete the core and specialist optional units in this qualification. This unit has been designed to enable students to use fundamental mathematical processes in the solution of Construction, Civil Engineering or Building Services Engineering problems.

Technology A
This unit provides the student with an introduction to the fundamental aspects of construction technology needed to successfully complete the other units of the programme.

Site Surveying Procedures
This unit builds upon the theory and practice of surveying. It is designed to enhance the student's ability to use modern surveying equipment to undertake a range of site surveying procedures typical of today's construction industry.

Building Services Engineering Technology
This unit provides the student with an understanding of the principal applications of building services to domestic, commercial and industrial buildings.

Health and Safety and Welfare
This unit covers the knowledge and skills needed to identify hazards in the workplace, assess the level of risk, make recommendations to control the risk and review the results. This must be considered along with relevant safety legislation.

Contractual Procedures
This unit aims to develop a working knowledge of the nature and purpose of legal requirements and the type of procurement arrangements that are used in the construction industry.

Design Principles
This unit provides the student with a fundamental understanding of the design process and of how the planning and design phases are co-ordinated and managed.

Management Principles
This unit provides the student with an introduction to the principles and application of management as they relate to the technical and professional disciplines of Construction, Civil Engineering or Building Services Engineering.

Group Project
This unit develops the students' ability to evaluate and resolve realistic practical problems and work as part of a team. The unit aims to apply the skills and knowledge developed in other units of the course (and where possible experiences from work) within a major piece of work that reflects the type of performance expected of construction technologists.
