Course Overview
This course is studied over one year full-time, usually by students who have successfully completed the Foundation Degree in Digital Media design course at UCBC. Students who have completed a similar foundation degree or equivalent elsewhere can also be accommodated on the course. The aim is to allow students to extend their qualification profile to a level expected in industry and in other career paths. Students use the year to develop their chosen field of practice to a professional level through self directed and negotiated study. Live, competition and experimental assignments form the core of study backed up by a substantial research project.

What will I study?
Students will be introduced to industry level professional projects ranging from international design or film festival set assignments to briefs set by live clients. Students are encouraged to nurture industry contacts for experience, advice and input. A strong and supportive tutorial and mentorship programme is operated by staff whose role it is to act as consultants and facilitators for student projects. Group work is encouraged and workshops are delivered in higher end technical or creative subjects ranging from preparing work for broadcast, DVD authoring and advanced Adobe After Effects to CSS and Information Architecture. Contextual enquiry is developed further with a clearer focus on each students own subject specialism through a substantive research project resulting in a comprehensive report and presentation.

Modules can include
The module in Professional Practice challenges students to produce creatively outstanding and professional work through a choice of assignments. In the Professional Studies module students are required to work on projects that are more innovative and experimental, work that pushes the boundaries of their experience and knowledge. Student study is supported by a research led module that aims to further develop contextual and contemporary awareness whilst enhancing professional understanding. The outcome for this module takes the form of a professionally structured report together with a presentation to their peer group.

The culmination of the year is a self initiated final project in each students specific area of study. They are lectured in how to develop a project brief, setting clear aims and objectives and negotiating deliverables. Throughout the year critical reflection is encouraged through self evaluation of all practical assignments.
