Course aims:
CG2356 NVQ3 in Electrotechnical Services is part of the process towards becoming a fully qualified electrician.
The course lasts one year and is three hour per week. The course is run on a tutorial basis and there is an expectation that the student will complete the majority of their portfolio in their own time.
The course also includes 3 on-site visits over the year for assessment purposes.

Course content:
On this course you will study:
  • Ensure safe site working
  • Diagnose and correct faults in Electrotechnical systems and equipment
  • Provide technical and functional information to relevant people about Electrotechnical systems and equipment
  • Maintain a safe and healthy working environment
  • Prepare to install electrical wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment
  • Install electrical wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment
  • Connect wiring systems and equipment using safe and approved methods
  • Inspect, test and commission an electrical system


Facilities for students:
This course is based at the Main Campus for City College in the heart of Brighton.
The Electrical Section is in a purpose-built unit, with modern, well-equipped workshop facilities and classrooms with computers.
There is an excellent cafeteria service in the Tower Block and central Brighton with many cafes etc is on our doorstep.
The NVQ portfolio can be built on-line or on hard copy.

Tutors:
The Electrical Department consist of a committed and experienced team of lecturers and assessors.
All our staff are qualified and experienced electricians. We have a mixture of fulltime and part-time staff.

Assessment: This course is based around continuous assessment. The assessor will arrange 3 on-site visits during the year to do direct assessment while you work and will also assess the portfolio of evidence created by you.

If you are assessed as a practising operative you will not need to do the AM2 skills test. If you assessed as a new entrant you will also have to pay for the AM2 skills test (approx 550). This will be explained at interview.
A Level 3 Technical certificate (2360 part 2 or 2330 level 3) can be used as evidence for the underpinning knowledge. If you do not have either of these then there is another option of demonstrating underpinning knowledge by assignments.
The route to gaining the qualification that is most suitable for you will be agreed at the interview stage

After completing this course, other courses are available CG2393-20 Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification of Electrical Installations, CG2391-10 Inspection, testing and Certification of Electrical Installations, CG2391-20 (formerly CG2400) Design, Erection and Verification of Electrical Installations, and CG2382 Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS7671: June 2001).
The NVQ3 is one of the requirements for the JIB Grading scheme and will enable you to become registered as an electrician.

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
