Course Overview This is a fast track course to gain a GCSE in English Language. Learners attend one lesson a week of 2 hours' duration. Students should come to the first class with a pad of A4 paper (wide-lined and with a margin), plus pens and pencils.

Qualification gained: GCSE in English Language at Foundation Level (up to grade C)

Course Content: Students will get the opportunity to do both creative writing (short stories, diaries, newspaper articles, etc.) and transactional (practical) writing, e.g. letters, reports, etc. They will read a Shakespeare play, some modern and some traditional poetry. The course content is especially geared to the interests of mature students.

Work Experience: There is no work experience on this course.

Course Assessment: Language- 60% exam and 40% coursework (20% oral + 20% written) Coursework to be completed by May. Exams are written in early June.

Progression: To further study at A-level or GNVQ Advanced level. In addition GCSE English is necessary for degree level study, and is required by many employers, in particular Nursing and the Civil Service. For those intending to teach, it is an essential qualification.

Homework: Students need to do approximately 4 hours work per week outside of class.

Additional Costs: There may be the opportunity for theatre visits at learners' own expense. Learners may buy their own Shakespeare texts if they wish.
