General overview
This exciting new Foundation degree has been specifically designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in surface design for the interiors market. The programme aims to produce designers who have a strong commercial awareness of current and developing trends, an ability to generate inspiring imagery, the technical skills to design for a variety of surfaces, and an understanding of product, manufacture and professional practice. The design of the programme has been developed in consultation with a range of companies who specialise in surface design for interiors to ensure that graduates have the most relevant and up-to-date skills required by the industry.
Level 1 modules: Imagery and Surface Development, Application Techniques, Introductory Surface Design for Interiors, Introductory Professional Studies, Introductory Contextual Studies.
Level 2 modules: Advanced Imagery and Application Techniques, Surface Design for Interiors (Negotiated Project), Work-Related Learning - Managing a Design Brief, Professional Studies, Contextual Studies.

Why study this subject at CCAD?
The programme has already developed extensive links with industry, which provide a wide range of work-related opportunities for students, including live assignments, visits to and participation in trade shows, competitions, and work experience in design, manufacture or retail.
The College has excellent studios, workshops and resources. You will be supported in your learning by a team of professional academic and technical staff. Traditional workshop areas are complemented by computer-aided design, digital printing and laser cutting.

What new skills will I acquire?
You will develop a wide range of skills in order to produce designs appropriate to surface design for interiors, and to promote professional practice, commercial awareness, employability skills, and knowledge of the industry. These include:
· Generating and developing imagery using traditional and digital methods
· Transferring imagery onto a range of resistant and non-resistant surfaces
· Repeats and layouts for interior surface designs
· The ability to experiment through sampling with a range of materials, processes, equipment and technology
· Research and development of ideas, designs and products
· Negotiating and managing design briefs
· Responding to the requirements of industry
· Presentation skills

What can I do next?
You can either go directly into employment or progress to an honours degree, such as BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface Design at Cleveland College of Art & Design.

Potential careers include: studio designer, freelance design work with companies and agents for a wide range of surface design applications, teaching and lecturing, surface design product development.
