Mature applicants (those over 21 years of age at the start of the course) who do not possess formal entry qualifications are welcomed. A portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative ability will be required to assess your suitability for your programme. Applicants under 21 should typically hold an appropriate Level 3 qualification, such as: A BTEC National Diploma in a relevant subject A Foundation Diploma in Art and Design An A Level programme that includes one or more relevant subjects All applicants will be invited to an interview with the programme leader.

Fine Art Foundation Degree
This programme is offered in partnership with the University of Greenwich. It can be taken as either a full-time two-year programme or a part-time three-year programme, with both options offering the opportunity to progress to the Fine Art BA Hons Top-Up programme run by the College. The aim of the programme is to provide a hands-on experience in fine art primarily to satisfy a personal need to explore and find expression through fine art media. The programme also integrates the development of vocational skills through Work Based Learning, which includes professionally exhibiting in a museum show and interactions with a variety of professionals relevant to the fine art sector. ?The world of contemporary fine art practice provides artists with an amazing diversity of possibilities in terms of the realisation of ideas and concepts as well as career opportunities. The programme will equip students with the ability to take full advantage of these opportunities. For students to move forward towards fulfilling their potential, three factors are considered relevant?: ?knowledge, skill and confidence, by working through the structure of the programme the development of skills and the gaining knowledge will increase confidence.

Course Content:
During the programme a broad range of Fine Art practice will be explored, including:

  • An introduction to drawing, painting and sculpture
  • Fine art digital applications
  • Curating and exhibiting (Work Based Learning)
  • Professional Studies (Work Based Learning)
  • Materials development (2-D and 3-D)
  • Contextual studies
  • Client referenced exhibition (Work Based Learning)
  • Professional presentation of exhibition (Work Based Learning)

  • Fine Art language

Attendance Requirements:
Full-time: Students will normally be expected to attend two days per week. Further details regarding course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available. Part-time: Normally one day per week, and one short evening every fortnight.

Entry Process:
All applicants will be invited to an interview with the programme leader, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

Assessment:
Assessment is based on course work.

Progression Routes:
Students successfully completing the Fine Art Foundation Degree can progress to the Fine Art BA Hons. (Top-Up) at West Kent College, other degree courses or employment in a relevant field. Further progression to a postgraduate qualification, such as an MA/MFA in Arts Administration, is possible for those who top up to a full undergraduate degree.

Career Options:
Future career possibilities for graduates of this programme include those as a practicing Fine Artist, a curator, and careers in teaching.
