The course leads to a Foundation Degree qualification validated by the University of Glamorgan and by Edexcel. Successful completion of the degree.

For students under 21: One A level or equivalent. Mature students may be accepted with no previous qualifications if they have relevant experience on the basis of an interview. Access qualifications welcomed.

Course Content
The Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies is a three year part-time higher education course which aims to give students the required theory and knowledge to work with children and young people as well as the necessary practical skills and attitudes. The course leads to a Foundation Degree qualification validated by the University of Glamorgan and by Edexcel. Successful completion of the degree may lead to progression to many higher degrees e.g. the part-time BSc Care Studies at Coleg Sir Gar or to further professional training, e.g. social work, teacher training, nursing. Career opportunities would typically be in child care projects.

Work experience placements in local agencies working with children and young people .
Opportunities to develop various skills through working in groups, making presentations and developing practical resources.
Student support available on site, ranging from learning support for study skills, through to financial advice, internet guidance and personal counselling.
Flexible part time delivery enables students to accommodate their studies into their busy lives.
Career Prospects and Progression
Progression to many degrees or professional training, e.g. social work, teacher training, nursing. Posts may be obtained in local child care projects. Progression to part-time BSc Care Studies at Coleg Sir Gar and part-time BSc Childhood Studies at the University of Glamorgan.

Method of Assessment
Each module is assessed separately by a variety of methods. Continuous assessment.
Course Length
The course is delivered over one day per week teaching, between 2.00 and 8.00 pm, across three terms a year for two years. Students have to complete a total of 600 hours of practical experience over the three years.
