Course description
This innovative Foundation Degree is aimed at existing complementary practitioners, healthcare professionals/other caring professionals, appropriate mature persons wanting to change careers or young people wishing to qualify in complementary approaches to health. It will be delivered at Abingdon and Witney College but validated by Thames Valley University. You will be able to research and develop skills from academic, clinical and personal perspectives in the field of complementary medicine. There is an increasing demand both within and outside the NHS for the skills of complementary practitioners and this course has been designed to conform to National Occupational standards. The programme is designed on a modular basis and you will attend college for two days per week for two years. You will gain professional qualifications with the Association of Reflexologists (AoR) and with the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists (IFPA).
Students will take the following modules:
Year 1
Body Massage
Reflexology
Human Body Form and Function
Introduction to Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)
Pathophysiology
Professional Practice and Practitioner Skills.
Year 2
Aromatherapy 1 and 2
Diet and Nutrition
Enhancing Professional Practice and Therapeutic Communications
Mind and body medicine.
Skills for Critical Appraisal.
In addition, students will develop the key skills essential in today's working world.

Foundation Degree ( Science) in Complementary Approaches to Health ( Aromatherapy and Reflexology)
Entry requirements
Traditional entry:
GCE A/VCE A Level points score of at least 40 points (which can include key skills, 3 GCSE passes grade C or above - Science, English and Maths and evidence of ability to study at HE Level 1). NVQ Level 3, BTEC ND and/or VTCT/ITEC practitioner qualification.
Non-traditional entry:
Mature students will also be considered on the basis of prior experiential learning and ability to work at HE Level 1. Qualities needed for applicants may include: ability to understand basic scientific principles, analytical skills, ability to communicate, empathy, and a methodological approach.
A preliminary interview would be required for these applicants.
