Part Time GCSE English

Course Description: What is the subject about?
English Language at GCSE will provide students the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to communicate with clarity and meaning both in writing and orally.

The course has been designed to develop the students' knowledge and understanding of language and literature through a wide range of reading opportunities; responding to both literary and non-literary texts and writing for a variety of purposes, as well as speaking and listening in a range of contexts.

Where can this subject lead me?
GCSE English is an essential requirement for many employees and the transferable skills are highly valued in many occupations.

Successful completion of this programme, in combination with other suitable qualifications, will allow entry for further study at A level.

Course Content
This is a well-structured programme organised into three essential components

Writing
Provides the skills to communicate clearly, imaginatively and effectively.

Reading
Provides the opportunity to understand and evaluate how writers use linguistics, structure, presentational devices and their effects.

Speaking and Listening
Provide the skills to participate in discussions, adopt roles and
communicate with audiences using a range of techniques.

  • A Shakespeare play "Much Ado About Nothing"
  • A Novel "The Women in Black" - Susan Hill
  • A variety of Poetry from other Cultures and Traditions
  • A wide range of media texts

Teaching and Learning Styles
This programme is delivered in a structured manner with materials written specially for the course in booklets which are designed to promote understanding. Learning activities are interactive and include small group class activities, whole group discussions and computer based support materials. Students work individually on their written coursework where individual help and consultation is available.

A range of oral and written coursework in a variety of forms and genre

Written Examination 60%
Paper A , testing reading and writing response to pre-release media texts.

Paper B , testing reading and writing in response to pre-release poetry from other cultures and traditions.
