Part Time GCSE Mathematics

Course Description: Why study this subject?
This one year course offers the opportunity to gain the nationally recognised qualification of GCSE Mathematics. The course is suitable for mature students wanting to study mathematics at this level and who need this specific qualification to progress onto their chosen career. The standard GCSE Mathematics course studied in school is usually covered over at least two years, with 4 - 5 hours of teaching per week; this course covers the same topics in a fraction of that time and so the pace of the work is necessarily high.

Where can this subject lead me?
Students completing GCSE Mathematics can progress to the traditional AS and A level Mathematics.

Course Content
In all the centres there is a three module programme assessed by written exam.

In the Lincoln Centre the first exam is in November with subsequent exams in March and June (there are opportunities to retake the early exams in June).
In the Newark centre the first exam is in March with subsequent exams in June.
In the Gainsborough Centre the programme is run with three exams in May/June

Topic areas include:
· Handling Data
· Number and Algebra
· Using and Applying Mathematics
· Shape, space and measure

Working towards the higher tier requires a significant amount of extra study by students, towards the topics only on the higher tier, in addition to the foundation tier topics studied in class.

Teaching and Learning Styles
Various styles of delivery will be used including formal teaching, group work and individual learning. The style will vary from topic to topic. Mathematics practise in class and through homework will be essential to help you to develop your skills.

Level:
2

Course Type:
Part Time

Entry Requirements:
Students need an interview or further academic guidance before they can enrol on this course.

The first class of the course is an induction session including a short numeracy assessment

Assessment and Progression:
This programme is examined at two levels - Foundation and Higher. At each level only a small selection of grades are available and so careful selection of the level at which you are to be assessed is required

This decision does not need to be made prior to starting the course but will be decided during your course study in agreement with your tutor.

The course is designed to give you the best opportunity for success. However, equal responsibility lies with you the student. Work towards the higher tier requires significant work by students in addition to the work in class.
You will be expected to

1. Attend all classes from the start of the September term.
2. Complete all work set. This will require you to complete work outside the scheduled class times.
