Course Content

This popular course is studied part time over two years. In the first year students study the four main areas of Computing with a further four modules studied in the second year with some choice of modules depending on student numbers and demand. Students will spend approximately 8 hours per week in scheduled classes, consisting of lectures, tutorials or practical sessions. A further four hours per week for each module will be spent completing coursework, general reading and other preparation. Because of the practical nature of the course, there is less emphasis on examinations, with most modules assessed by assignments.

Career Prospects and Progression

This course has a strong practical orientation and prepares for a career in computer application design and development, or user support and training in commercial organisations and software houses. It is a growing and lucrative industry and opportunities exist in the private sector, public services and worldwide. Successful completion of a HNC qualification will enable students to apply for a top-up degree in Computing.

Modules

The modules to be studied are: Year 1: Introduction to Web and Multimedia Authoring; Information Systems Development; Introduction to Programming; Computer System & Networking Concepts. Year 2: four of the following: Rich Internet Application Development; Information Systems Analysis and Design; Event Driven Programming; Network and Operating System Principles and Administration; Multimedia Authoring & Development; Database Development; OO Software Development; Multimedia Production; Computer Forensics; Cisco.

Method of Assessment

Each module will have assessed assignments, and some will have an examination at the end.
