Course programme

The Liverpool MBA in General Management is a recently-established and already well regarded programme of postgraduate study. The MBA is designed to prepare students for employment in the wide and diverse management sector of the twenty-first century. It blends the theory of management you would expect to see in a traditional Masters-level qualification with more practical skills needed for employment (such as teamwork, decision-making, problem solving and wider analytical skills) in an array of management fields and is designed to appeal to both graduates with some experience of employment in management, as well as middle or senior managers who wish to add further academic skills and qualifications to their existing vocational and practical expertise.
The MBA brings together a relatively small group of students from a range of nationalities and with different experiences, together with tutors with academic knowledge, bolstered by guest speakers who have considerable management expertise. Drawing on this variety, we endeavour to present a course that is varied in its content and style, whilst being challenging and enjoyable. We place great emphasis on working closely in group work and encourage students to learn from each other. Many of our graduates now work in management positions in countries across the World. The MBA examines all the important aspect of management, including how resources, change, and the working environment are managed. We also include modules that allow you to investigate - in depth - human resources, marketing, finance and other management issues.
As with all the Liverpool MBA level programmes, the General Management programme is multi-disciplinary in content. It offers a holistic programme of management and vocational skills through a blend of marketing, human resource, accounting and strategic management modules, set against an innovative teaching and learning strategy.
Full-time MBA students follow a 52-week programme consisting of six core modules, two elective modules and a dissertation of between 15-20,000 words. Dissertation work is carried out throughout the summer on a relevant Management sector topic and progress is closely monitored by a personal dissertation supervisor.
The Liverpool MBA (General Management) is structured to ensure you are taught the fundamentals of management. Most modules are taught intensively in one day (9am-5pm) over a period of five weeks. The modules, Managing Financial Resources, Managing the Environment, Managing People, Managing Change, Mapping the Global Environment and Strategic Management Simulation are core modules. The other compulsory module (dissertation) is taken after the final second semester exams in May. A list of the core modules is:
Semester 1
ULMS701 Managing Financial Resources
ULMS702 Managing the Environment
ULMS703 Managing People
ULMS776 Mapping the Global Environment Semester 2
ULMS704 Managing Change
ULMS774 Stategic Management Simulation
Elective Modules
Supplementing these compulsory modules are a choice of elective modules. Two must be chosen. The choices are:
Accounting/Finance
ECON801 Corporate Finance & Evaluation
ECON803 Capital Markets
ECON805 Management Accounting
Human Resources
MABA218 Strategic HRM
ULMS786 HR Resourcing
Marketing
MABA204 Consumer Behaviour
ULMS712 Services Marketing
ULMS717 Corporate Communications
ULMS999 Entrepreneurial Marketing
Other Management
BAPA105 Project Management
ULMS999 Operations Management
A range of management learning pod selections including
ULMS761 Management Game
No more than one of the following MSc and on-line modules
ULMS788 Business Leadership
ULMS999 Investment Strategies
Please note that an exciting, innovative module has been running since 2007 that allows students to apply much of the theoretical knowledge gained from modules taught in the first semester to practical situations. This is the "Management Game" module, which involves sessions led by industry leaders in the fields of international business, HR, marketing and crisis management. Because some of the module takes place in the workplace, availability is limited.
Summer
Students are required to submit a 15-20,000 word dissertation on a topic related to the programme (full-time students by mid-September 2009; part-time students by mid-September 2010). Preparation for this piece of work goes on for the duration of the MBA programme and students are closely supervised throughout. A number of intermediate "deadlines" are set to ensure students are progressing satisfactorily with their research and written work. Additional features of the Liverpool MBA programmee include:
Liverpool MBA guest speaker series: Throughout the academic year we invite guest speakers with considerable experience of management issues to talk to students on the Liverpool MBA (General Management) programme.
Evening Networking Events: The Management School also organises a range of evening events, where students get the opportunity to network with local, national and global business people and listen to presentations on topical themes.
Social Events: Outside of their studies, our students experience a busy and enjoyable social scene. This is partly generated by social secretaries (elected by fellow students in the first few weeks after arrival) that organise social events in Liverpool as well as various other destinations.
Career prospects
Programme graduates should have enhanced access to general management positions in a wide range of graduate recruiter organisations including the major accountancy, financial and management consultancy services companies, 'blue-chip' manufacturing and service companies, major retailers, construction, engineering and information technologies sectors.

Additional information

Support: The University also offers a range of scholarships and financial support schemes for UK, EU and International postgraduate students.
