Course Content

This award replaces the Registered Managers' Award at level 4. This is a part-time programme offered as a series of workshops and tutorial sessions (one day a week). It is aimed at people who are currently in managerial roles in residential care projects and should help them gain a qualification which recognises and develops their skills in that role. Students work with professionally qualified teachers and tutors to develop a portfolio of evidence of their knowledge and skills in key areas of care home management, and usually complete this within one academic year. Successful students should be able to use the qualification to develop their careers as managers of care homes. The key purpose of the award is to lead and manage an excellent, integrated, ethical and inclusive service provision which meets the needs of individuals, safeguards and promotes well-being and the development of people

Course Features

Assessment is continuous and by portfolio. There are no examinations.

Opportunities to work and learn in small groups, sharing knowledge and experience.

Flexible part-time programme.

Much student support available on site, ranging from learning support for study skills, through to guidance in use of the internet, and personal counselling.

Career Prospects and Progression

The programme is one of the requirements under The Care Standards Act for those running residential homes. Successful students should be able to use the qualification to develop their careers as managers of care homes.

Modules

The course comprises of four core units which are mandatory and four optional units which are chosen by the candidate. Core Units The core units are: Manage and develop yourself and your provisions workforce; Lead and manage a provision that respects, protects and promotes the rights and responsibilities of people; develop and maintain systems procedures and practice to manage risks and comply with health and safety requirements within your provision; Lead and manage effective communication that promotes positive outcomes for people.

Method of Assessment

Portfolio based. Continuous assessment.

Course Length

The programme is delivered over approx six hours (one day) per week, daytime only, across three terms a year for one academic year.
