Candidates who wish to undertake this qualification must possess an NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care or, desirably, an NVQ Level 3 to ensure that they have the required broader knowledge and understanding that underpins this qualification. The minimum age of entry for this qualification is 18.

It raises awareness of the range of needs a person may have and how they and their families/friends can be supported. The course is work-based with a tutor visiting students in the workplace to provide support and guidance.
Course Content:
The course consists of four mandatory units that will provide students with an understanding of the needs to different clients: Unit 1 Understanding palliative care
- Definitions and features
- Death one of the last taboos
- Commons myths and questions
- The support services available to a dying person and their family
- Models of palliative care
Unit 2 Supporting a persons needs in a palliative care context
- Understanding a whole-person approach to care
- Communicating with a dying person and their family
- Providing psychological and emotional support to the dying person and their family
- Supporting a person with their social needs
- Supporting a person with their spiritual, religious and cultural needs
Unit 3 Supporting a person with their physical care needs
- Understanding pain and the principles of pain management
- Supporting a person with other distressing physical symptoms
- Understanding cancer
- Using a person-centred approach to support a dying person with their personal care needs
Unit 4 Care during the final hours of life and bereavement care
- Facing death and the final hours of care
- Caring for the deceased
- Understanding loss and grief
- Supporting the bereaved
- Coping with your own grief and feelings of stress
Entry Requirements:
Candidates who wish to undertake this qualification must possess an NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care or, desirably, an NVQ Level 3 to ensure that they have the required broader knowledge and understanding that underpins this qualification. The minimum age of entry for this qualification is 18.
Assessment:
Workbook based assessment and observation of practice.
