Course Summary:
The level 1 Plumbing Technical Certificate at Nescot College is a 1-year course, available on a full-or part-time basis to fit around your existing commitments. The course will contain a mix of practical and theory lessons enabling you to gain an all round understanding of plumbing.

As a qualified plumber you will undertake a whole range of work. You may work in a wide range of buildings, domestic, industrial and commercial, both occupied and empty. You will work with a very wide selection of materials, metals, plastics and an interesting range of systems providing cold and hot water, heating, sanitation and drainage.

Some plumbing components are basic, others, including boiler controls, have electronic control systems, which require highly skilled craftspeople who can operate competently in a wide range of skill areas.

Plumbing is an important part of the UK construction industry. Your day's work could include anything from working in someone's home replacing or servicing an item of plumbing equipment to installing a large complex heating or plumbing system in a multi-million pound building.

Course Details:
Our courses can be completed in a variety of ways to fit in with your personal and work needs. Courses are available on a full-time basis or one day per week. This course is part-time day. When you apply please indicate clearly which you are applying for because the applications and the waiting lists for each are processed separately.

You will be invited to an induction day in early September when details of days and times of attendance will be finalised. Family and work commitments will be taken into account where possible. One day per week for one year to achieve the ASET Level 1 Certificate in Basic Plumbing Studies (Technical Certificate). Followed, if successful, by one day per week for two years to achieve the City & Guilds 6129 Plumbing Technical Certificate Level 2.

Modules:

- Installation of plumbing systems such as pipework bending, measurement and marking out.
- Cold and hot water supply
- Above and below ground discharge systems
- Customer care in the working environment
- Hot water heating systems
- Health and Safety. This will be an especially important consideration when you are working in the construction industry.

Career Progression:
Working in the construction industry can be a very rewarding experience, not only financially but also because of the pride you can take in standing back and looking at something you have helped to build, something which many people will use and admire for years to come.

The variety offered is virtually endless, no two buildings are the same or built by the same team of people. There is no being stuck in one place doing the same repetitive job for someone involved in the construction industry. You will be travelling around, involved in many different types of work and working with a constantly changing team of people.

The construction industry also offers boundless opportunities for development and, whilst you may start off working in a fixed trade, you may choose at some point in your career to set up your own company, or move up the management ladder working for somebody else. All these options, plus countless others, are available to you.

Other Information:
When you start studying at NESCOT you will be joining an organisation with a long and successful track record. We have been training people in construction craft skills for many years. We have some of the best facilities and workshops in the Southeast and are constantly developing these to reflect real changes in the industry.

All the qualifications we offer are recognised by the construction industry. Both the qualifications we offer and the structure of the courses may change from year to year as the demands of the industry change.

Students must have a pair of steel toe capped boots and plumbing industry approved clothing, which must be worn at all times in all workshops. Attendance will not be permitted without appropriate footwear. Students must also provide appropriate equipment for theory lessons. All tools for college use are provided.

Requirement
In order to ensure that your course suits both your career plans and abilities we have a two part process of assessment and advisory interview for construction students. The first part consists of a construction based aptitude assessment called 'Bpec' which is a mix of multiple choice and calculation exercises. The assessment will take 45 minutes and you should allow for an hour at the College. You will need to bring some identification with you, such as a provisional or full driving licence, passport or school ID card. On your second visit you will have an informal advisory interview with a construction tutor. Your discussion with the tutor will be for approximately 30 minutes and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and to find out more about the content of the course. PART TIME COURSES: If you are under 19 year old you must be employed in the relevant trade. A letter from the employer will be required upon enrolment. Over 19 year olds do not have to be employed in the relevant trade to gain access to this course. Numeracy and Literacy skills are very important for success. It would be preferable that you are capable of working at grade D level for Maths and English. We will also be looking for a Bpec assessment score of 50%.
