Course Description:
Computer Science
This course aims to provide students with an education and learning experience that will equip them to operate on graduation as autonomous computing professionals. Similar to computing courses in other streams, the programme aims to instil knowledge and to develop critical and intellectual abilities applicable to problem solving and solution specifying in technologically and socially diverse environments.
The programme also aims to develop professional and transferable skills in a wide range of methods, techniques and practices appropritate for the task domain of a professional software developer.
The Computer Science stream is distinctive in that it provides a strong conceptual and methodological grounding and seeks to develop a rich and up-to-date set of practices and techniques which students can deploy in state-of-the-art software and hardware contexts.
An HNC comprises 150 cats points of study whereas HND and Foundation Degree comprises 240 cats points of study as shown below. Each unit attracts either 15 or 30 cats points.

GCSE 'C' Maths or Key Skills Level 2 Application of Number
A minimum of 120 UCAS Tariff points from the following:
- GCE A and AS Levels with at least one subject at A Level
- BTEC National Qualifications (Certificate or Diploma) in a relevant subject
- AVCE in a relevant subject
- Access to HE Scottish Higher/Advanced Higher with at least one subject at Advanced Higher.
For mature applicants some experience may be taken in lieu of A Levels/AVCE
HNC Part-Time Computer Science/HNC top up to HND
GCSE 'C' English or Key Skills Level 2 Communications
GCSE 'C' Maths or Key Skills Level 2 Application of Number
One of the following:
- BTEC National Certificate or Diploma
- BTEC Advanced GNVQ (related subject)
- One A Level or Scottish Advanced Higher
- Access to HE
- Mature candidates with appropriate industrial experience
HNC Top-Up to HND requires the appropriate HNC
Assessment and Progression:
Progression
On successful completion of HNC, a student may top-up their HNC or HND as a part time student.
On successful completion of HND (part time or full time study) or Foundation Degree, a student may progress to final year BSc at the University of Lincoln in the same named pathway.
Assessment
Assessment of the modules is by a combination of coursework, in-class test and formal examinations.
Duration:
HNC - two years part time
HND - two years full time or 1 year part time top-up from HNC
Foundation Degree 2/3 years mainly work based.
