PATHWAYS - Level 1 Horticulture

Course Aims:
To support the development of both personal and practical learner skills and knowledge within a vocational area that will be useful for employment within the horticulture sector. It also provides the opportunity to move into further learning and training.

Course Content:
The course is made up of a number of individual units. Five units are linked to personal and social development that includes undertaking an Enterprise Project. This introduces aspects of planning, advertising and selling a product. It also provides opportunities to use and develop team working and customer service skills.

The other units include a variety of practical skills to introduce and develop horticultural skills and knowledge. The units include understanding Sowing and Growing Techniques, Plant Pruning, Planting Containers, Organic Horticulture, Cultivating Herbs, Compost and Soils.

Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT are also included at the appropriate individual level.

Progression:
Level two Horticulture, other level two programmes, progress into employment with training

Awarding Body:
National Open College Network (NOCN)

Exam:
Portfolio of evidence that is internally marked and externally verified

Qualification:
NOCN Diploma in Skills Towards Enabling Progression (Step-UP)

Level 1

Notes:

Boots and a coat will be required as parts of the course are based outdoors

Duration:
1 year over 3 or 4 days a week
