Course programme
If you participate in the care of patients in the operating room, our ten-week, Level 6 course will help to enhance your existing clinical knowledge and contribute towards your continuing professional development.
This module is designed to meet the needs of registered nurses, operating department practitioners and other healthcare professionals. It will give you a theoretical knowledge base in order to develop competence and expertise in the practical areas of theatre practice, including 'scrub' and 'circulating' duties in the operating room. Operating room practice involves understanding anatomy and physiology and being able to apply knowledge to practice in the surgical setting.
You'll also develop the specialist skills and knowledge necessary to perform effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
We use a number of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars and practical activities in our state-of-the-art theatre and skills lab facilities. The course is delivered on a day release basis, with one study day at university per fortnight of the trimester. You’ll spend a large amount of time in clinical practice meeting practical competencies.
We run this course alongside the Operating Department Practice DipHE, so there are opportunities for multidisciplinary learning and networking. Small class sizes allow you to develop an excellent rapport with your tutors and fellow students.
This module is aimed at practitioners with a minimum six months' experience in the theatre environment. It can form part of your continuing professional development or be a contributory module towards a degree programme.
