This five-day CPD course runs over one week and is designed to provide general dental practitioners (GDPs) with further understanding in periodontology.
The emphasis will be on diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management, as well as the role of periodontics in the daily clinical practice.
You'll also develop relevant clinical skills through the hands-on elements of the programme.

About this course

By the end of the course you should:
feel confident in diagnosing and managing straightforward clinical cases involving periodontal diseases on your own
recognise indications for specific periodontal therapy/procedure and refer to specialist(s) when needed
be able to incorporate the learned knowledge and skills in your treatment plan and clinical management
have a general idea on the flow of the treatment phases in periodontics and the initial estimate of the treatment outcome

The course is aimed at GDPs with interest in restorative dentistry, specifically periodontics.
You must hold an approved dental qualification.

The course will give you 32.5 hours of verifiable CPD. You'll also get a certificate of attendance.

Day 1: Introduction to periodontology
  • Introduction to periodontology: why should we be interested in periodontology?
  • Anatomy of periodontium
  • Classification of periodontal diseases
  • Aetiology of periodontal disease
  • The link between oral and systemic condition: truth or myth?
  • Diagnosis of periodontal disease and use of diagnostic tools
  • When to refer?
Hands-on
  • Periodontal examination on clinical partners
  • Introduction to instruments and periodontal charts
  • Treatment planning on selected cases (with radiographs/study models)
Day 2: Overview of periodontal therapy
  • Systemic modification/management
  • Initial cause related therapy (including OH modification)
  • Corrective therapy
  • Periodontal maintenance
  • Non-surgical periodontal treatment
  • Wound healing with long junctional epithelium
  • Does non-surgical debridement work?
  • Tips for efficient debridement
  • Adjunctive use of antimicrobial: when to use?
Hands-on

Demo and practical with the following:

  • Ultrasonic scalers
  • Gracey curettes
  • Air polisher
  • Cleaning tools (interdental brushes)
Day 3: Corrective phase - periodontal surgery
  • Rationale of surgery (why and when is it indicated)
  • Indication and contraindication
  • Types of periodontal surgery (including periodontal regeneration)
  • Wound healing
  • Gingival recession: aetiology and management
Hands-on

The hands-on sessions cover the following:

  • Flap design
  • Suturing
  • Single root coverage procedure
  • Soft-tissue graft harvest
Day 4: The role of periodontics in multidisciplinary approach
  • Perio-endo
  • Perio-prostho
  • Perio-ortho
  • Importance of biologic width
  • Biological and clinical concept of crown lengthening
  • Trauma from occlusion: diagnosis and management
Hands-on
  • Simple crown-lengthening surgery
Day 5: Periodontal therapy: Does it work?
  • Periodontal prognosis and prognostic factors
  • To save or to extract a periodontally compromised tooth
  • Importance of periodontal maintenance
  • Implant placement in patient with history of periodontitis: what should we anticipate?
  • Peri-implantitis: what do we know about it?
Discussion and conclusion

You'll be encouraged to bring in cases to be discussed.
There will also be a Q & A session.
