Course programme
Perioperative Advances in Safe and Effective Patient Care is a Level 6 course which will help to enhance your existing clinical knowledge and competence, and contribute towards your continuing professional development.
Together, we'll explore the ever-changing roles and responsibilities of experienced, qualified perioperative practitioners with particular emphasis on the ethico-legal implications of perioperative patient care.
The module encourages you to advance your clinical skills, as well as your critical understanding of contemporary evidence-based practice. It allows you to develop the knowledge and skills you need to be able to function independently or as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
You’ll explore contemporary issues in the operating room environment through a combined process of reflection, critical thinking and incident analysis, looking at the interventions which promote patient safety and wellbeing throughout the surgical process. In addition, you'll look at human factors and the social processes by which people interact in group environments, and how these can be heavily influenced by individual and cultural personalities and behaviours.
This course will be mostly classroom based, using lectures and seminars to encourage critical though and analysis. There'll be some practical sessions too, taught in our state-of-the-art theatre and skills lab facilities. The course is delivered on a day release basis, with one study day at university per fortnight of the trimester. You’ll spend a large amount of time in clinical practice meeting practical competencies.
We run this course alongside our Operating Department Practice DipHE, giving you opportunities for multidisciplinary learning and networking. Small class sizes allow for an excellent rapport with tutors and your fellow class members.
