Course programme
The course is designed to enable learners to gain knowledge of what dementia
is, the different forms of dementia and how others can have an impact on the
individual with dementia. It will focus on an individual’s ability and needs to
reflect a person centred approach.
This unit is relevant to workers who provide direct personal care to individuals with dementia
in all care settings – hospital, residential, day, or in the client’s own home.
• Understand what dementia is
• Understand the key features of the theoretical models of dementia
• Know the most common types of dementia and their causes
• Understand factors relating to an individual’s experience of dementia
• Understand the importance of a person centred approach to dementia
care and support
• Involve the individual with dementia in planning and implementing their
