Personal Development - Leadership & Management ILM
The ILM Award in Personal Development consists of 4 modules.
Module 1
Managing Yourself
This module addresses the best way to approach self management and includes techniques for planning your work and the work of a team. You will learn about SMART objectives; how to use them to prioritise your own actions, and how they can be used to assist in achieving team and organisational goals. You will then go on to consider time management techniques and how to use action plans to define personal objectives in relation to team objectives.
This unit also looks at stress at work; its causes, impact and management.
Module 2
Workplace Communication
The aim of this unit is to develop an understanding of communication as required by a practising or potential team leader. This unit looks at the stages involved in the communication process, and at barriers to communication and how to overcome them.
You will also study the range of direct communication methods available and their relative advantages and disadvantages in a variety of work based situations, as well as aspects of face-to-face communication, including appearance, impact and body language.
Finally, students studying this module will look at the importance of succinct and accurate records of one-to-one oral communication and the reasons for maintaining records of one-to-one communication (e.g. potential disciplinary or legal issues).
Module 3
Diversity in the Workplace
The aim of this module is to introduce you to the main concepts concerning diversity in the workplace to enable you to use this knowledge to inform your actions at work. You will study equal opportunities legislation and how it applies to you and your team, what is meant by discrimination and harassment, and develop new skills to help you recognise discrimination in the workplace.
The module explains how to prevent discrimination from occurring and the steps you must take to deal with it should it become a problem in the business in which you work. You will also be asked to consider how you work with other people and look at strategies to help you build stronger working relationships with your colleagues. You’ll explore ethics and values and learn what action you should take to minimise conflict and disruption when clashes in values occur.
Module 4
Induction and Coaching in the Workplace
This module will give you practical skills to help settle staff into your business and techniques to support them as they learn to perform new tasks in a new setting with new people.
The module explores the problems people face when they start a new job, join a new team or take on new responsibilities. You’ll learn the importance of effective inductions, and how to plan and implement them. You will also study the benefits of coaching and mentoring as methods to develop a team. You’ll explore the skills you need to coach and mentor people effectively and the practicalities of developing an effective coaching programme.
