Course programme

This course provides an introduction to the world of fashion and personal styling. You'll learn how to assess your client's wardrobe requirements in line with their budget and lifestyle -as being taught how to create outfits that will enhance your client's body shape and improve their confidence. It will cover client consultation, wardrobe editing, and colour analysis.

This is a practical course delivered in a series of lectures. Each week you will be set an assignment that puts into practice the topics covered in the lecture, and you will be given a combination of written and verbal feedback during the course. There will be some elements of self directed study, and students will be expected to visit retail environments in order to complete some of the personal shopping tasks.

The course includes:

  • A background to the Fashion Media and different types of styling. Why does styling matter? What does a stylist do?
  • The key skills a personal stylist needs to perfect
  • How do identify body shapes and proportions - for both men and women
  • Shapes and silhouettes - how to build an effective wardrobe that works on every body shape
  • Luxury vs budget - when to save and when to spend
  • Working within a client budget to create current looks
  • Wardrobe edits and “capsule” wardrobes
  • Creating mood boards with clients
  • An exploration of trends: what is a trend? How do we spot them and analyse them? What impact do they have on us and our clients?
  • An introduction to trend forecasting
  • Insider tips on fit and “wardrobe hacks”
  • How to conduct a client consultation
  • Using a client's skin, eye and hair colour to help identify which tones work best for clothing
  • Completion of research tasks and independent research

Why choose an LCF online learning short course?

Our online learning short courses allow you to experience London College of Fashion wherever you are in the world. The real-time chat sessions are fully interactive allowing you to communicate easily with the tutor at the same time as fellow students. You will participate in the live classes each week and you will undertake weekly assignments to be completed in your own time.

Online learning:

Please make sure you are available to participate in the live online chat sessions which are run to UK time.

All online learning courses include weekly chat sessions with your tutor and other students on the course, which are conducted through an interactive seminar (called Blackboard Collaborate). The chat sessions will include text and voice/video chat, as well as an opportunity to 'share' your tutor's desktop so that s/he can navigate you through websites, powerpoint presentations and other work. These sessions are essential to attend each week, so please check the times of the course when you book and take into account any local time differences.

You may also be required to undertake weekly assignments between sessions. These will be housed on our Workflow website, along with additional resources and discussion forums which can be used to interact with fellow students in between classes. You may be expected to dedicate between one - two hours a week to these self-study projects. A full technical specification is listed in 'Materials'.
