Unlike the other types of training that we offer that are not breed specific, there are certain breeds of dogs that are better suited to this type of training than others. Without doubt, our first choice of dog would be a German Shepherd but we have had many Rottweilers, Mastiffs, Belgian Shepherds, Dobermans and Labradors that have made the grade.
All dogs whether our own or customers dogs sent for training undergo assessment to determine their suitability prior to receiving this training. This assessment tests not only the dog's courage but also its temperament, as an even temperament is in my belief the key to a good personal protection dog.
Typically, personal protection training normally takes 6-8 weeks.
Following training of the dog, the existing or new owner is put through a handover course where they will be taught the fundamentals of dog handling. This handover in the case of someone purchasing a trained dog from us, also acts as an introduction to their new dog and a chance for the dog and handler to start the bonding process.
The handler is shown how to utilise the dog's training to its best advantage and is taught how to control the dog in many different scenarios. In addition to field work and training with the dog, the handler will also be shown the best way to groom the animal and be coached in the basics of dog ownership i.e. feeding & exercise requirements etc.
This is also the time when the do's and don'ts of owning a dog trained in this way are discussed. We believe that this handover period is of paramount importance both to dog and handler, a feeling shared by many of our satisfied customers.
A Personal Protection dog in the wrong hands could be classed as a weapon, therefore, as a responsible company we take all steps reasonably possible to ensure that our dogs don't go to the wrong people.
Lastly, The Most Important Point
Any dog requires feeding, walking, medical care, time and most important of all, love. If you have not the time or the inclination to provide man's best friend with these basic things, but are looking for some form of security, then I would suggest a Burglar Alarm, as they can survive on electricity alone.
