This postgraduate certificate,  studied traditionally or by Distance Learning is the initiator and comprises 60 credits of study towards the MSc Construction Project Management course. Learners will be introduced to the growing need within the built environment sector for professionals with a thorough understanding of the management of the construction process from inception to completion. As a student you will experience structured learning with problem-based scenarios and research that will develop your capabilities for critical thinking, argument, creativity and encourage innovation, all of which may be brought into the practical decision making processes encountered in built environment projects.
This course will introduce you to the art and science of construction project management covering areas that may include  strategy, control, technical, commercial, legal, financial and organisational issues. You will begin to reflect on and make cases for the integration of the technical (hard) and social (soft) management styles required within the context of strategic and operational construction projects.

About this course

This course comprises 3 x 20 credit modules taken from the MSc Construction Project Management. 

For the traditionally taught course, lectures and tutorial sessions will run on Wednesday during each semester.  This enables self-directed study to be programmed by the student to complete the study requirement.   If you have been out of studying for a long time or unsure about the commitment, it is possible to breakdown the course by studying  for the Certificate (60 credits) or the Diploma (120 credits) and upgrading to the full MSc before accepting the lower award.  

You will take three of the modules studied for the MSc Construction Project Management giving a total of 60 credits.  The modules are as follows and the choice will depend upon the timetable operating at the time:

One of the key challenges for successful delivery of a construction project is administering it in accordance with the terms of the contract used for it. This requires expertise on the standard forms of contracts available, ability to synthesise principles from them and related documents for application to problems often encountered on projects. The principal aim of this module is to develop these attributes in relation to the most commonly used forms of contracts.

The strategic management of the business case for programmes and projects from the concept, design and definition stages through to implementation of the built or finished product. Strategic advice and management to and for the client including finance and investment.


You will be exposed to construction project management at a strategic and operational level. This course will expand the horizon of the construction project into the inception, concept and feasibility projects that need to take place in order to ensure that the building project meets the needs and objectives of the client and the clients business.

This course will apply a balanced hand to the art and science of project management dealing with both the technical and the softer people related attributes of effective construction project managers.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Appraise critique and evaluate the advantages of the art and science of effective and efficient construction project management within a variety of strategic and operational contexts.
  • Acquire knowledge through academic, industrial and practical research and apply solutions to a range of complex issues, adopting suitable approaches to problem solving and decision making.
  • Work, lead and manage within an effective team environment whilst analysing and recognising the contributions of individuals.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.


For entry onto the Postgraduate Certificate programme

(Completion of which, with a minimum of grade C in all modules, will allow a student to progress to the Master’s programme )

A pass at degree level or relevant experience which will be determined through the process of application and interview.

Students applying for individual modules will be required to demonstrate the ability to absorb technical concepts and detail, possibly by way of their previous industrial or commercial experience.

Minimum English competency is the standard Postgraduate entry: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent
