PG Certificate in Professional Practice in Healthcare will allow you to demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights at the forefront of your academic discipline or area of professional practice. You will undertake three core 20 credit modules.

Progression to MSc Professional Practice in Healthcare

Successful completion of the PG Certificate Professional Practice in Healthcare will provide an opportunity to progress to the MSc Professional Practice in Healthcare following one of four pathways:

The aim of the module is two fold: Firstly, to equip healthcare professionals to become critical consumers of research as practitioners by providing them with knowledge and understanding necessary to understand the impact of research through the ability to evaluate research appropriately; and secondly to provide the opportunity to undertake an in depth literature review to investigate a research question of their choice. The module provides an introduction to different types of literature review, systematic reviews, integrative reviews and scoping reviews. The module provides an introduction to a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods and outlines the different epistemological and ideological foundations of contrasting research paradigms. The module includes exposure to the techniques involved in analysing both qualitative and quantitative data, as well as considering ethical issues relating to research.

The module aims to enable students working or planning to work in the health, social care arenas to: - Develop advanced academic writing and study skills for successful postgraduate study and advanced professional development. - Raise your awareness of your knowledge skills and abilities, their acquisition and their relevance within Health and Social care employment. - Develop an electronic personal development plan that will form the basis of your programme at Masters level or your career plan. Your personal development plan will need to outline a complete, comprehensive and cohesive programme of study that relates to your current and future professional development goals or proposed career. This programme may be work based or taught or a combination of both. You will need to be in current employment to undertake work based modules. Your personal development plan may be added to over the duration of your course and made into a professional portfolio of academic work and other materials. - Create a professional curriculum vitae for inclusion in your professional development plan / portfolio. - Develop your reflective practice skills and ensure that your study is focussed and the most appropriate development plan for your current and/or future employment goals. For work based route students it is a tripartite agreed programme between yourself, your employer and the University. Students may not study any further work based units, (7WB001, 002, 003 and 004) until they have achieved a pass grade for this module.

At the end of the module you will prepare a final report summary to disseminate your findings to others.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.


  • You must be a Healthcare registrant, currently registered with the NMC, HCPC, GPhC or GMC.
  • An existing undergraduate degree or postgraduate certificate or above, or alternatively certificated evidence of recent study at Level 6 (within the last 3 years) to ensure ability to study at Masters level./li>

Self-funded:

Your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
