The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE, Post Compulsory Education) offers initial teacher education for those who wish to be employed in a variety of post-14 educational and training establishments.

This could include FE colleges, adult education providers, academies, UTCs and training providers and will eventually enable the holder to submit evidence for Professional Formation and Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) post graduation status once registered with the Education and Training Foundation (ETF). This course is designed to meet the ETF Professional standards and has at its heart a model of Critical Reflective Practice that facilitates an ongoing professional dialogue between student, mentor and tutor. 

We are currently looking for applicants who have relevant degrees and would like to teach any of the following subjects: Animal Behaviour/Animal Science, Art and Design, Art & Design - Graphics, Business Studies, Chemistry, Early Childhood Studies, English, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), General Science (Biology AND Physics or Chemistry), Health and Social Care, Hospitality, Mathematics, Media Production, Music Technology, Music Performance, Other Education  Related, Photography, Special Needs/Supported Learning, Sports, Travel and Tourism and Uniformed Public Services.

*Please note some subjects have small numbers and can fill up quickly, therefore if you are successful at interview, you may be placed on a waiting list with an offer for the next intake.

This postgraduate qualification offers 60 Masters-level credits* that can be used towards any of our Masters degrees in the field of education (for those in a position to self-fund the course).

About this course

Our PCE teacher training programmes seek to prepare student teachers to develop the knowledge, skills and personal qualities required of a professional teacher in the post compulsory sector. 

You'll also be placed in a lifelong learning setting for two days per week and two days will be based at the University. You'll also go on two block placements during the year – where you are supported and supervised by college teacher mentors, as well as by a University Personal Tutor whom you meet on a weekly basis.

This module – along with Reflecting on Self and Identity and Personal and Professional Development - forms the heart of the PGCE and will prepare new teachers for a career in the Lifelong Learning Sector by establishing a foundation in planning, teaching and assessment of learning as well as developing skills in reflective practice.

This module will support participants in their classroom practice. The focus of the module is developing learning resources within a chosen subject discipline. Participants will appraise a variety of learning resources taking into account the learning needs of 21st century learners. The module also considers the significance of learner evaluation as a tool for reflective practice and identifying continual professional development needs.

The module will prepare students for teaching in post compulsory education. This is an introductory module and will therefore cover a number of key themes. The module considers the different contexts and curriculums within post compulsory education. Students will be introduced to professional roles, responsibilities and relationships within teaching. They will also be introduced to a range of strategies for teaching, learning, assessing and feeding back.

This module runs across both semesters and complements 6PC014 (Constructing Self and Identity) and 7PC005 (Reflecting on Self and Identity). It contains pragmatic elements such as personal action planning for enhancing practice, and theoretical elements such as critical reflection-on-practice.

This module is designed to help students develop an understanding of how professional practice is positioned within a globalised and marketised policy discourse. The impact of policy on lifelong education and professional practice will be explored. A range of theoretical concepts will be introduced to help students to critique policies, strategies and practice within institutional and professional contexts. The module will also provide a framework for conducting a piece of small-scale educational research. After undertaking a literature review students will design and carry out a piece of research linked to their professional practice.

This module - along with Constructing Self and Identity and Personal and Professional Development - forms the heart of the PGCE. It further develops concepts of planning, teaching and assessing as well as exploring notions of self and subjectivity in relation to developing and continuing wider professional practice.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.


  • To hold a honours degree (normally 2:2 or above) of a United Kingdom higher education institution or equivalent qualification in a subject related to the area you wish to teachwith vocational / professional experience considered carefully in each individual circumstance.
  • To have achieved grade C/4 or above in GCSEs English and Mathematics, or equivalent qualifications.

Please note we do NOT accept GCSE Short Courses, GCSE English Literature or GCSE Equivalent Tests from other institutions or organisations.

We do offer computer-based Key Skills Level 2 Numeracy and Literacy equivalency tests at the University Walsall Campus. A charge will be introduced as follows: £40 for one test or £60 for two tests.

You will be required to provide evidence of your original qualifications.

You must be sure that you wish to embark on a career of teaching in Post-Compulsory Education before applying for this course. In order to achieve this we recommend that you gain some experience within the post compulsory sector. We expect you to research your subject area within the post-compulsory context, and to visit a further education establishment to make an informed decision about how your subject specialism fits into the national vocational framework.

We will not accept applicants onto our professional courses who have been unsuccessful on professional courses at other institutions of higher education.

If you have accepted a Conditional Offer made by the University of Wolverhampton you will receive correspondence asking you to complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The charge for this will be a DBS fee of £40.00 and a £6.00 ID check service fee. You will also need an Occupational Health Check prior to starting the course.
