The Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Leadership is a collaborative programme between Edge Hill University and the Royal College of Physicians.

If you are a senior registrar, new consultant, or general practitioner seeking to take greater responsibility within your organisation, this programme will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to enable you to focus upon your own role as a leader and successfully plan and implement change in practice.

About this course

This programme will support your potential career progression and knowledge development as you seek your first recognised leadership role as a medical leader.

You will develop and demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to underpin effective leadership and enhance your ability to plan, implement and evaluate change in clinical practice that supports the improvement of patient care.

The normal minimum requirement is an undergraduate medical degree. You should be a doctor practising at grade ST3 or higher (or equivalent) . You should also be registered as a professional with the General Medical Council.

Course programme

What will I study?

A range of psychometric and other feedback tools will be used to develop your insight into yourself as a leader. You will gain an in-depth understanding of different approaches to leadership and explore how to apply leadership skills in the workplace. In addition, you will conduct and evaluate a small scale change project, related to the medical leadership service improvement agenda, which will enable you to lead and implement change in practice.

Additional information

How will I be assessed?

You will be required to demonstrate your learning through written assignments which will include the production of a reflective portfolio, a project proposal, and critical analysis of implemented programmes.

Who will be teaching me?

The programme will primarily be delivered by senior academic staff from both Edge Hill University and the Royal College of Physicians, with support from recognised clinical leaders.
