The Certificate in Trade Mark Law and Practice is a requirement for those wishing to qualify as Trade Mark Attorneys but it is also open to students who want to get a good understanding of national, European, and international trade mark law at an advanced level. The Certificate in Trade Mark Law and Practice programme has been specifically designed in close co-operation with the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA) and IPReg for the trainee agent.
Online Open Day
This programme starts in mid-September and initially runs as a two-week intensive course, followed by ten two-day sessions between October and April and exams during the summer exam period (late April to early June annually).

This programme will:
Feature the involvement of trade mark and patent practitioners.
Give you a solid basis for further specialisation in trade mark law.
Give you the necessary legal knowledge, whilst you work, enhancing your practical skills.

Course programme

StructureProgramme structure

This programme starts in September and runs as a two week intensive course, followed by ten two-day sessions between October and April and exams during the summer exam period (between late April and early June annually). You will begin your study of the programme with an intensive two-week induction period of full-time teaching on the Fundamentals of English Law and Professional Ethics, introductory elements of the Designs & Copyright law and Trade Mark Law & Practice A modules. These will be conducted in mid-September.

You will then proceed to study the remainder of the Trade Mark Law and Practice A module, Designs & Copyright Law module, and Trade Mark Law and Practice B between October and April.

Compulsory modules:

The Certificate in Trade Mark Law and Practice programme consists of four compulsory modules (60 credits in total):

  • Fundamentals of English Law and Professional Ethics
  • Trade Mark Law and Practice A
  • Trade Mark Law and Practice B
  • Designs and Copyright Law.

Provisional Schedule - Intensive two week period and study sessions

  • Intensive first two weeks: 16-27 September 2019
  • Formal Enrolment date: 16 September 2019
  • Additional module teaching: 23 September 2019 – 31 March 2019.

  • Study session 1: 11-12 October 2019
  • Study session 2: 25-26 October 2019
  • Study session 3: 8-9 November 2019
  • Study session 4: 22-23 November 2019
  • Study session 5: 6-7 December 2019
  • Study session 6: 10-11 January 2020
  • Study session 7: 24-25 January 2020
  • Study session 8: 7-8 February 2020
  • Study session 9: 21-22 February 2020
  • Study session 10: 6-7 March 2020.
