The faculty is research-intensive and highly-ranked internationally. Society needs graduates with strong analytical skills. Therefore, our PhD programme will deliver a research education that focusses on academic excellence. Our graduates will perform research at the forefront of their fields, will acquire a set of skills that will also serve them well outside academia, and will be aware of their responsibilities as researchers.

Our researcher training in social science holds high international standards and qualifies you for an career within academia or other professions with high demands for skills and expertise.

The Faculty of Social Sciences houses about 5000 students and 500 employees. It consists of five Departments within the disciplines of psychology, economics, social anthropology, political science, sociology, and human geography. The Faculty is also home to two research centres, and one Norwegian Centre of Excellence in research: ARENA Centre for European Studies; TIK, Centre for Technology, Innovation, and Culture, and ESOP Centre for the study of equality, social organization, and performance.

Course programme

Programme structure - PhD

The PhD degree consists of a scientific thesis and an educational component equivalent of 30-45 ECTS.

As a part of the educational component, all PhD candidates at the Faculty of Social Sciences have 10 ECTS of compulsory courses in philosophy of social science and research ethics (among other things).

The rest of the educational component varies depending on the candidate's programme option.
