Philosophy and Creative Professional Writing

Your writing modules will fall broadly into three categories: Craft of Writing modules, Reading as a Writer modules, and Working as a Writer modules. Craft modules focus on you as a writer and are designed to help you explore your creative imagination whilst developing the skills required to express it. Reading as a Writer modules are designed teach you how to read with an eye for technique: the emphasis here will be on what you can learn from other writers across a spectrum of styles and genres. Working as a Writer modules have a vocational dimension and offer the opportunity to develop skills that will enhance your employablity as a writer.

In philosophy, the first year of study provides a comprehensive introduction to critical thinking and philosophy. You will study modules which introduce you to some of the subject’s key concepts, equipping you with the knowledge and skills required to study this subject at degree level. In your second year you look at key traditions in moral philosophy and get the chance to assess your own moral intuitions and concepts. You may also investigate the Enlightenment - widely regarded as the movement that formed the central institutions and structures of the modern western world. The third year of the course becomes more specific and focussed and you can choose from modules like "Freedom, Recognition and Authenticity"; "Philosophy of Mind"; "Self and Other".

All students will have the opportunity to write a dissertation that combines Philosophy with Creative and Professional writing.
