You can study Philosophy and Religion as a joint honours degree with French (50% Philosophy and Religion, 50% French).

The School of Philosophy and Religion at Bangor University offers the opportunity to study some of the most important and challenging philosophical ideas that have shaped Western culture, and to consider how they interrelate with Western religious thought. The School has developed out of a longstanding tradition in these subject areas within the University since the 19th century, and you will find here a friendly and informal atmosphere that will help you to cultivate the skills of debate and independent thinking.

About this course


The course aims to enable understudies to: Develop translation and reading comprehension skills through the study of texts that vary in style and register.

Use new vocabulary effectively and confidently in written work.

Demonstrate an understanding of key grammatical structures; use more complex grammatical constructions in set grammar exercises and essay writing.

Write accurate and idiomatic French.


A Philosophy and Religion course will open up opportunities in a broad range of areas, including teaching, communication, publishing, social work, librarianship, the media etc. Many students will go on to pursue postgraduate degrees leading to an MA, MRes or PhD.

Studying Modern Languages opens the door to a wide variety of careers. Many Bangor Modern Languages graduates have, of course, gone into teaching and translating, but just as many have embarked upon successful careers in the civil service, business and commerce, industry and the media. The skills you learn whilst studying languages cultural awareness, communication, accuracy, planning and logical analysis are valued highly by employers from all sectors of the economy.

280 240 UCAS tariff points must include at least two full A levels. All subjects are accepted (including General Studies) with either Philosophy or Religion preferred but not essential.
Applications from mature students and overseas students are very welcome and are judged on an individual basis. In the case of mature students anAccess qualification or evidence of recent study to a standard equivalent to A level is preferred.

Course programme

Course Content: Teaching is mainly by lectures, seminars, and individual tutorials. Many modules also make use of Blackboard, the University’s online learning environment. During each semester you will study modules equivalent to 60 credits, making a total of 120 credits per year. We use a wide range of methods for assessment, including essays, book reviews, case studies, reports, presentations, and written examinations. In the second year you have the option of taking an ‘independent study’ module, wherein you can choose a topic in which you have a special interest and undertake independent study under the guidance of a supervisor, leading to a 5,000-word essay. In the final year, you will be encouraged to develop this topic further, or choose a different one of your choice, to undertake independent research under the guidance of a dissertation supervisor, leading to a 10,000-word dissertation. What will you study on this course? In all years of this joint honours degree, you will take modules equivalent to 60 credits in the School of Philosophy and Religion and 60 credits in the School of Modern Languages.
