The School of Philosophy and Religion at Bangor University offers the opportunity to study some of the most important and challenging philosophical ideas that have shaped Western culture, and to consider how they interrelate with Western religious thought. The School has developed out of a longstanding tradition in these subject areas within the University since the 19th century, and you will find here a friendly and informal atmosphere that will help you to cultivate the skills of debate and independent thinking.

About this course


The course aims to enable understudies to: Knowledge of the 'long' fourteenth century gained through directed reading, lectures, and seminar discussions.

Awareness of different historical interpretations and the ability to judge between them gained through directed reading, lectures (which will often concentrate on explaining historical argument), and seminars which will debate and discuss controversial points). Feedback on essays will also foster awareness of different interpretations;

Basic study skills will be promoted through practice, advice in seminars, and feedback on essays. Students should also remember the advice on studying in the student handbook, and should feel free to approach seminar leaders, lecturers, or their personal tutor with any problems they are experiencing.

The ability to form historical arguments and to back them up with evidence promoted by experiencing such arguments in reading and lectures, by student practice in making contributions to seminars, and by feedback on essays


These wide ranging skills can be applied to a great variety of careers which means that history and archaeology graduates are faced with a broad spectrum of job opportunities, arising both directly from their studies, or as a foundation for careers in other fields for which a degree in history or archaeology is particularly useful. Examples include:

Researchers and writers for television, radio and film
Journalism and publishing
Teaching in primary, secondary and higher education

280 240 UCAS tariff points must include at least two full A levels. All subjects are accepted (including General Studies) with either Philosophy or Religion preferred but not essential.
Applications from mature students and overseas students are very welcome and are judged on an individual basis. In the case of mature students anAccess qualification or evidence of recent study to a standard equivalent to A level is preferred.

Course programme

What will you study on this course? In your first year of this joint honours degree in Philosophy and Religion and History you will take modules equivalent to 60 credits in the School of Philosophy and Religion. The other 60 credits will be taken in the other School. In your second year, you will take modules equivalent to 60 credits in the School of Philosophy and Religion and 60 credits in the other School. In your third year you will take modules equivalent to 60 credits in the School of Philosophy and Religion and 60 credits in the other school. You may be eligible to choose the Dissertation module (40 credits), which involves independent study with supervised support, leading to the submission of a 10,000 word dissertation.
