The School of Philosophy and Religion at Bangor University offers the opportunity to study some of the most important and challenging philosophical ideas that have shaped Western culture, and to consider how they interrelate with Western religious thought. The School has developed out of a longstanding tradition in these subject areas within the University since the 19th century, and you will find here a friendly and informal atmosphere that will help you to cultivate the skills of debate and independent thinking.

About this course


The course aims to enable understudies to: developed an awareness of the stylistic range and formal principles of Western music during the period from around 1000 AD to the present day;

developed an awareness of contexts surrounding the composition and performance of music during this period

developed a secure understanding of the chronology and geography of music during this period;

developed an awareness of key concepts and issues in current musicology

developed listening skills and aural aptitude

developed skills of individual research

developed written and presentational skills in relation to the history of music


Studying Philosophy and Religion will open up opportunities in a broad range of areas, including teaching, communication, publishing, social work, librarianship, the media etc. Many students will go on to pursue postgraduate degrees leading to an MA, MRes or PhD.

While many graduates pursue careers in the area of music, a degree in Music is also good preparation for a wide range of employment in administration, commerce, management, and other professions. Our graduates have become professional performers, composers, university lecturers, researchers, teachers, arts administrators, music therapists, music publishers, librarians, concert managers, stage managers, recording and broadcasting producers, and sound engineers. Many former students have followed these degrees with further musical training, as performers, scholars or composers, and there are opportunities for all these at Bangor.

280 240 UCAS tariff points must include at least two full A levels. All subjects are accepted (including General Studies) with either Philosophy or Religion preferred but not essential.
Applications from mature students and overseas students are very welcome and are judged on an individual basis. In the case of mature students anAccess qualification or evidence of recent study to a standard equivalent to A level is preferred.

Course programme

What will you study on this course? In your first year of this joint honours degree in Philosophy and Religion and Music you will take modules equivalent to 60 credits in the School of Philosophy and Religion. The other 60 credits will be taken in the School of Music. In your second year, you will take modules equivalent to 60 credits in the School of Philosophy and Religion and 60 credits in the School of Music. In your third year you will take modules equivalent to 60 credits in the School of Philosophy and Religion and 60 credits in the School of Music. You may be eligible to choose the Dissertation module (40 credits), which involves independent study with supervised support, leading to the submission of a 10,000 word dissertation.
