Tour objectives are simple. To provide great hands-on photography instruction in how to take professional quality photos, which can imediatly be put into practice in fantastic and diverse photogenic situations, while showing Barcelona through the eyes of a professional photographer. Suitable for: The course is aimed at beginners and intermediates who want to improve their photography skills on a practical course in photogenic surroundings. The course is designed to give participants a complete photographic experience. Groups are limited to 6 participants, guaranteeing maximum personal attention and instructor student interaction.

About this course

Your only requirements are an interest in photography and a digital SLR camera.

Having said that we colaborate with a local photography shop and can rent you a brand new camera of your choice for the duration of the weekend for 50€ which, if you decide to buy it, is discounted from the original price.

Course programme

Barcelona Photographer Weekend Photography Workshop.

This course is designed to be a hands on and complete photographic experience in which you will:

  • Experience this wonderfully photogenic city through the eyes of a professional photographer while learning techniques to capture its unique style and atmosphere on daytime and night time photography tours.
  • Photograph a professional model in a professional working studio.
  • Learn about and practice night photography and dance photography.
  • Get an introduction to photoshop.

Course outlineIntroduction

The introductory meeting is held at 10am on the Saturday morning at Barcelona Photographer’s photo-classroom at Calle Diputacio 292 and covers the following:

  • Introduction – meet the photographer and other course members
  • A review of/ introduction to the basics of digital photography
  • The course, outline and timings
  • Practical do’s and don’ts in Barcelona

Photographic tour

We take you on an adventurous route that will lead you into and through the urban heart of the city, stopping off half way for a lunch at a typical taps restaurant called ‘Vildsvin’ complements of Barcelona Photographer. As well as seeing Barcelona through the eyes of professional photographer and learning a little about its culture you will be taken to photogenic locations which lend themselves to teaching and practicing the following:

  • Exposure: f-stops, aperture, shutter speed, depth of field.
  • Freezing and panning a moving Subject
  • Depth of field
  • ISO
  • Image Composition
  • White Balance
  • Types of lenses

Studio Shoot

After an introduction to the various lighting and photographic techniques that are specific to studio photography you will have over an hour and a half in which to practice these techniques and get some fantastic shots photographing our professional model in various posses and with different lightings. Learning how to communicate to the model exactly what you want her to do and the fantastic photos that you go away with at the end of it, is almost as rewarding as the range of new photographic skills and knowledge that you will learn in this wonderful photographic experience:

  • Studio lighting techniques
  • Use of the light meter
  • Strobe and tungsten light, filters, flash accessories
  • Combining available light with fill-in flash
  • Use of reflectors and translucent softeners on location and in studio

Dance photography and Night shoot (optional)

During this evening session we will visit ‘Los Tarantos’, a photographer-friendly flamenco show where the students are encouraged to shoot the dancers and musicians in traditional Anadalucian surroundings. We will then spend a further hour in the heart of Barcelona studying and practicing night photography. This optional evening session will cover:

  • Shooting movement in low-light conditions
  • How to expose for night-time photography
  • Long exposure using a tripod
  • Exposure Bracketing
  • Using flash for impact

Photo Essay

Following an introduction as to the do’s and don’ts of a good photo essay you will be assigned a topic. In pairs or individually you will then have a limited time to go out locate and photograph locations and subjects of interest to get the shots that you will need to present your photo essay. This is your chance to be original and creative while at the same time putting into practice what you have learnt during the course. The nature of the assignments could be as follows:

  • Reportage of street life
  • Modernist Barcelona
  • Artistic projects using fragmentation, movement, long exposure, soft focus.
  • The Shadows of the Boqueria
  • Skateboard!


Photoshop

You have your pictures, now learn how to add those final touches to really make them stand out! During this classroom session you will learn the most important techniques used to retouch images and will have the opportunity to work on re-touching the photographs you took during your assignment to prepare to present your photo essay to the rest of the group. Our Photoshop course covers the following main areas:

  • RAW
  • Levels, Colors and Curves
  • Filters
  • Basic Photoshop correction techniques

Final presentation

In this end of course presentation you will display and present the results of your photo essay to the rest of the group, allowing the instructor to critic each project individually and provide you with final feedback and advice. All the photographers that have satisfied the teaching professional will then be presented with a course certificate confirming that they have successfully completed Barcelona Photographer’s intensive weekend course.
