BA (Hons) Physical Education Secondary leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

The Bedford campus has over 100 years experience of PE teaching. The course covers all six areas of the National Curriculum to a detailed level and has a school placement in each year of the course. The programme is rated for its high graduate employment and has been recently assessed as Good by Ofsted. The Faculty is one of the largest providers of Education training in the UK and enjoy, in many cases, a 100% graduate employment rate.

The course offers an in-depth and high quality qualification in PE Teaching leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Knowledge and skills are developed in order to inspire active school children. The course prepares students to teach pupils in secondary schools, tertiary and further education colleges.

In addition, students undertake a six week placement in years one and two, an eight week placement in year three and a twelve week placement in the final year. All students follow a broadly based course for the first two years. In years three and four, students specialise by choosing options in theory and practice to suit future career aspirations.

During the programme, students will study a wide range of practical including Games Activities, Dance, Athletics, Gymnastics, Swimming and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities.

This practical element is supported by theory which explores the areas of functional anatomy, human physiology, exercise physiology, sport biomechanics, psychology of sport, motor control and learning, sociology of sport and philosophy.

Career Opportunities

The Bedford campus has over 100 years experience of PE teaching. Graduates are therefore highly employable all over the UK and occasionally abroad. Some choose to work in colleges of further education or outdoor education centres. A few have become university lecturers at Bedford campus and some are professional or amateur athletes.

Teaching/learning methods and strategies

Teaching is delivered through a variety of methods including lectures, seminars, workshops, practical sessions, individual tutorials and school placements.

Assessment

Assessment on the course is through essays, group research, presentations, seminar papers and exams. All students use the University’s Virtual Learning Environment to supplement and enhance the learning experience.

Entry requirements

  • 240-320 points based on minimum of two A levels (or equivalent).

  • All suitable applicants will undergo a check by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and a health check.
  • We welcome applications from students with ethnically diverse backgrounds and students returning to education. We also support widening participation and encourage applicants with non-standard qualifications.
