Physiotherapy MSc (delivered with St George's, University of London)

The main focus is on the foundation skills of physiotherapy, using a problem-solving approach it will draw on some of the year two modules of the BSc Physiotherapy and integrate with existing Master's level modules on reflective practice and psychology for exercise and health.

You will study the broader concepts of clinical practice and the preventive and innovative role of physiotherapy to meet changing health and social care needs. You will share modules with year three BSc and postgraduate professionals in order to further develop critical thinking and leadership skills in an interprofessional environment.

This module is designed to prepare you for physiotherapy practice. This module consists of understanding the different dimensions of being a healthcare professional.

It will integrate the application of theoretical knowledge to the clinical setting by building on the basic clinical skills and problem-solving approaches required to be an effective physiotherapist.

This module is designed to further develop the foundations skills of musculoskeletal assessment learned in the first year. You will also develop skills in reasoning and problem solving, given particular assessment findings, and will be able to apply appropriate treatment and/or management strategies. The module also aims to prepare you for clinical placement and emphasises a self-directed learning approach for evidence based practice.

The theoretical and practical underlying principles of neurological physiotherapy practice in the management of neurological movement dysfunction form the framework of content for this module. An integration of neuroscience with the principles of physiotherapy is used to develop clinical reasoning, therapeutic models of intervention and practical skills.

Students will be encouraged to consider the psychosocial, emotional and environmental issues in relation to practice.

This module aims to integrate the knowledge of basic sciences into an understanding of patients with pathology of cardio-respiratory system.

This module will facilitate identification and effective management of physiotherapy problems which may arise in high dependency units, intensive care and tertiary care. The content and delivery are designed to further develop reasoning, problem solving and practical skills in order to ensure appropriate physiotherapeutic rehabilitation.

A critical approach in the understanding of current management topics in cardio-respiratory care is encouraged. The development of key skills of IT, literacy, communication, team working, independent learning and lifelong learning are also integral within this module.

The focus of this module is the exploration of reflective strategies for rehabilitation practice. The module offers you an opportunity to reflect on your own learning in the context of your working environment. Additionally, it will enable you to consider how to facilitate a reflective approach within a team.

A reflective approach to professional practice is a vital part of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and it is hoped that this provides a valuable grounding for those looking to advance practice in healthcare.

This module will examine the psychology that underpins exercise for health and will develop an in-depth understanding of psychological well-being and psychological interventions to promote physical activity.

The practice education element is a key part of the course. It helps transitional learning and ensures that you practice physiotherapy safely and competently. You must therefore pass all practice placements independently to progress on the course. You will be assessed by the practice educators and supported by the visiting academic tutor.

This module aims to further develop a problem-based approach to holistic patient management within the context of physiotherapy practice. You will be able to apply critical reasoning within the context of research and experience to patient management.

In addition, this will help integration of broader concepts of clinical practice, like understanding of the current health sector, regulatory and quality bodies in Britain and their impact on physiotherapy practice on patient management.

The focus is on learning within an interprofessional environment plus an opportunity to explore issues relating to contemporary management of healthcare. The dual themes of interprofessional practice and management of healthcare are integrated across the module.

The assignment allows you to explore critically a healthcare issue raised in the module and develop your report writing skills.

Research is the process by which we determine whether what we do makes a difference in the lives of the people we serve. In the rapidly changing and increasingly accountable world of health care, physiotherapists must be willing and capable to both search for evidence about the effectiveness of their practice and modify their practice in response to the evidence that is found. The ability to be able to carry out key investigation techniques and analyse the findings is also important.

This module will help you to implement and apply research methods and techniques previously taught such as collecting, handling and analysing your own data and presenting your results.

The focus of this module is the compilation of a reflective practice portfolio. The portfolio gives you the opportunity to compile evidence that relates to your own working environment.

The aim is for you to reflect on your learning, performance and on issues relevant to advance practice in healthcare. A reflective approach to professional practice is a vital part of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The appreciative and critical enquiry of factors influencing how people live with long-term conditions is the focus of this module. Many underlying concepts at both individual/personal level, and organisational/service delivery level impact on the lives of people with long term conditions and will form an important focus of the module.

This module provides a particular emphasis on the skills and knowledge required to work at an individual/personal level to enable skills of self-management and active participation.
