Course programme

• How to practise (rational and efficient routine)

• Technique principles (use of weight, relaxation, basic motions, how to overcome any difficulty)

• How to develop sight-reading

• How to develop aural skills

• Reinforced knowledge of Music Theory (approximately grades 1-2)

• First understanding of music as a language, music interpretation as rhetoric (art of convincing) and technique as a complex of gestures aiming to realize the composer’s intentions

• Practice and performance of at least three pieces from Grade 1-2 syllabus (or above, according to the level of each student), covering Baroque, Romantic and 20th Century styles

• Performance of some ensemble (group) pieces appropriate to everyone’s ability and level (if the level of the group allows). Teaching methods will consist of tutor’s whole class teaching, accurate personal coaching, examples at the piano, listening to other pianists examples, schemes, staves and notes drawn on the white board, mnemonics.

The following resources will be available: hand-outs, whiteboard, computer and loud-speaker.

It is advisable to bring paper and pen from the first class.
