Year 1
There are two strands to this apprenticeship, Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating Systems, or Plumbing and Heating. To achieve the level 2 NVQ Diploma in Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating Systems, you will study the following mandatory units understand and carry out safe working practices in building services engineering, understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering. You will also cover the following units understand how to apply environmental protection measures within building services engineering, understand how to apply scientific principles to mechanical engineering services, understand and carry out site preparation, and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems, understand and apply domestic cold water system installation and maintenance techniques, understand and apply domestic hot water system installation and maintenance techniques, understand and apply domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques. You will also cover apply safe working practices in the building services engineering working environment, install and maintain domestic heating systems.
To achieve the level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating, you must complete the following: understand and carry out safe working practices in building services engineering and understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering. You will also cover the following units understand how to apply environmental protection measures within building services engineering, understand how to apply scientific principles within mechanical engineering services, understand and carry out site preparation, and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems, understand and apply domestic cold water system installation and maintenance techniques, understand and apply domestic hot water system installation and maintenance techniques, understand and apply domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques, understand and apply domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques and understand and apply domestic above ground drainage system installation and maintenance techniques. You will apply safe working practices in the building services engineering working environment and install and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems.
Within the second year you will complete your practical assessments and also focus on completing your competencies within your NVQ portfolio. This will be your responsibility to complete your job knowledge questions and also ensure that you cover the range of work required for your assessor to observe you in your working environment.
