Yes NON-ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS Applicants will also be required to provide a satisfactory personal statement and reference (academic or employer). Those meeting the entry requirements may be shortlisted for interview and will be subsequently required to meet enhanced a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check and Occupational Health requirements. Successful applicants will be required to complete a one day observational placement within the School of Podiatry Central Clinic prior to commencement of the course (this will be arranged by the School of Podiatry). By coursework and written/practical examinations. Students have to successfully complete all modules. Podiatry students are also required to complete 1,000 hours of clinical practice in order to be eligible for entry to the profession. A significant proportion of this experience is acquired in the College’s purpose built clinic, operating theatre and biomechanics laboratory. The school works in partnership with Health Education West Midlands (formerly The Strategic Health Authority) and an essential part of the clinical component is spent on placement with NHS service providers (note that some students may be expected to attend placements outside the local region).

As a graduate in Podiatry, you will have the ability to work both within the National Health Service and as an independent practitioner, which enables you to either join a team within a private practice (if successful at interview) or set up your own private practice. You must be able to work as a team and make complex clinical judgments with a good understanding of working within a health care team. Podiatry graduates will be eligible to apply for membership of the professional body, known the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists. You will also be eligible to apply to join the register regulated by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). Only through being a registrant within this regulatory framework, will you be allowed to use the protected titles ‘Chiropodist’/’Podiatrist’, which opens doors to employment within both the NHS and private sectors as a Chiropodist/Podiatrist. As an HCPC registrant you will be required to maintain your skills by demonstrating regular Continuous Professional Development (CPD). Further career opportunities include working with multidisciplinary teams in clinical specialisms including diabetes, biomechanics/musculoskeletal injury, rheumatology, podopaediatrics, sports injury. There will be opportunities to undertake further study and through this to enter fields such as podiatric surgery and forensic podiatry as well as taking the other specialism to greater depth. The opportunities to continue study to Postgraduate level are high. Self-employment within private practice and employment within corporate organisations including orthotic manufacturers is available.
